NIV But the Babylonian army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They captured him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him.

NIV Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him, and the rest of the people.

NIV But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.

NIV sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard. They turned him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.

NIV “Go and tell Ebed-Melek the Cushite, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words against this city—words concerning disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes.

NIV But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear.

NIV I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the LORD.’ ”

자신은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 않은채 하나님의 말씀이 바뀌기를 바라는 잘못된 믿음을 가지고 있는 시드기야에게 하나님의 말씀이 바꾸지 않고 그대로 실행되어진다.

반대로, 세상의 눈으로 보면 민족의 반역자 예레미야가 말기야의 구덩이에 빠져 죽어가고 있을 때 홀로 왕에게 찾아가 예레미야를 충언을 하고 예레미야를 구했던... 구스 사람, 왕의 내시 에벳멜렉은 하나님께서 살리신다.

오늘 본문 말씀을 보면 바벨론이 예루살렘을 침공하고 모든 왕족들과 귀족들을 죽이거나 포로로 끌고 가는 긴박한 상황 가운데, 하나님의 말씀이 처음으로 예레미야에게 임하여 하시는 말씀이... "에벳멜렉을 살리라!"는 것이다... 문득 머릿 속에 이삭을 죽이려는 아브라함을 막으시는 하나님의 모습이 생각났다. 물론 다급해하시거나, 긴장하실 일 없는 하나님이시지만.... 에벳멜렉을 얼마나 아끼시는지 느껴지는 본문이었다.

우리의 삶은 어떠한가... 하나님의 말씀을 지키는 것은 지금의 내 삶에서 합당하지 않다고... 그건 그때의 이야기지 지금 내 현실과는 괴리가 있다고 생각하면서 차일피일 순종을 미루면서... 하나님의 놀라운 일들은 구하는 시드기야 처럼 살아가고 있지는 않은가?

에벳멜렉 처럼 오늘을 살아가기 위해 목숨을 걸고 믿음으로 살아가는가...

그 결과는 불변한다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 말씀이기 때문이다. "네가 나를 신뢰함이니라" 하나님을 신뢰하는 사람만이 산다.
